What is a T-Visa?
T nonimmigrant status (T-Visa) is a temporary immigration benefit that enables certain victims of a severe form of trafficking in persons to remain in the United States for an initial period of up to four years. Congress created the T-Visa status in October 2000 to offer protection to victims and strengthen the ability of law enforcement agencies to prosecute human trafficking. T nonimmigrants who qualify may also be able to adjust their status for a green card and become lawful permanent residents.
Who can qualify for a T-Visa?
T-Visas are available to victims who arrived in the U.S. due to sex or labor trafficking and complied with any reasonable request from a law enforcement agency for assistance in the detection, investigation, or prosecution of human trafficking. Exceptions and exemptions may apply for complying with law enforcement depending on the scenario or victim's age. Certain family members of trafficking victims may also be eligible for a T-Visa.
